Final Fantasy VII Remake Interrograde: Episode Intermission Review

Yuffie shines in her dedicated history DLC

When Final Fantasy VII remake Released in 2020, its reception was a welcome surprise. Between a disappointing Ffxiiia disorder FFXVAnd heavy expectations for a midgar meeting, it seemed that Square Enix could not keep the promise of Ffviir. However, we are there.

While fans are waiting for the second part of the Remake Saga, Square Enix dropped another pleasant surprise in the form of Episode intermission. Part of the improved PS5 Final Fantasy VII Remake Interrograde,, Intermission Provides a pause with two chapters from cloud escapades and avalanche crew. And that does this by giving players control of a fans’ favorite: Yuffie, the most proud ninja of Wutai.

At $ 20 (or $ 70 to buy Examination),, Intermission May be an expensive excursion. Fortunately, the story of Yuffie is worth the price requested, providing new combat mechanisms and mini-games on a generous from seven to nine. It is not without defects, but those who manifest for more VII remake will find a lot to love here.

Wutai’s largest ninja, reporting for duty!

If you have played the original Final Fantasy VII Or not, there is a lot to love in Yuffie Kisaragi. It is from the country of Wutai, a former independent nation which fell in Shinra during WUTAI Warwhich took place before the events of Ffvii. A passionate ninja, a cunning thief and a dedicated Materia hunter, Yuffie aspires to restore Wutai to her former glory, and houses a deep resentment for Shinra and the people of Midgar.

In the original game, Yuffie served as an optional character that players could only recruit after leaving Midgar. However, in a surprise even for VII veterans, Intermission She arrives in Midgar, before the collapse of the plaque in sector 7. Her goal: to infiltrate Shinra and steal a piece of powerful and top secret Materia.

Even Yuffie, brand new adventure

As with several parts of Final Fantasy VII remake,, Intermission was shaking what we know (or think We know) on the emblematic cloud course. The Yuffie DLC is entirely new territory for VIIIntroducing a new scenario and characters. The most notable addition is Sonon Kusakabe, another Wutaian which served under the father of Yuffie during the War of Wutai. Together, Yuffie and Sonon must navigate in the slums of sector 7, by coordinating with an avalanche sect to access the headquarters of Shinra – and the Materia inside.

The DLC offers a welcome color to Yuffie, which has played more than one rear role in the original VII Compared to Cloud, Tifa and Aerith. His relationship with Sonon adds a new dimension to his character, thanks to both their shared past and their current mission. A particularly fun through the line: although Sonon is his age, Yuffie beat him on the Wutaian command chain. Sonon regularly calls the ninja adolescent’s “boss”, although it is old enough to drink (and do a little reconstruction on the wall market).

About a fifth the length of VII remake,, Intermission Does not have the same weight as the massive campaign of the basic game. However, with two chapters, several changes in location and a surprising number of secondary missions and distractions, it is simply long enough to be substantial. There is a start, an environment and an end to the story of Yuffie and Sonon, and in the end, I really cared about the improbable duo.

A powerful punch

Most of the development of Yuffie and Sonon does not occur through Intermission History, but through his fight. While Final Fantasy VII remake The players had switched between Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith, Intermission Put Yuffie at the heart of the action.

Ninja brings its own movement and its ability to meet. Its basic combo is concentrated around its Shuriken, which it can use to fight at close range. Keep the attack button, however, and Yuffie will bounce back, creating a distance between you and your enemies. Press the special button and she will launch her Shuriken, opening a set of ninjutsu attacks that you can use from afar. You can even activate various elementary ninjutsu, allowing you to exploit enemy weaknesses.

Adding another wrinkle to combat is sound. You cannot control it directly, but you can deliver commands to him. It comes equipped with some of the Ffviir more gambit-The matria, like self-cure and provoking, guaranteeing a gross, if not effective, version of AI. In addition, you can press the left trigger to synchronize the movements of Yuffie and Sonon. This slows down the ATB bar of Sonon, but gives powerful attacks by the label team that will quickly blame the enemy.

The joys of combat

There is a final rhythm in the style of play of Yuffie. Unlike Cloud and Tifa, who are physical fighters, or Barret and Aerith, who are fighting, Yuffie flows between the two styles. Since she is the only character you control and that you no longer exchange between the members of the group, this modified design philosophy makes sense.

It took me a little practice to balance the attacks of Yuffie, the Sonon commands and the capabilities of the pair tag team. But once I understood everything, Yuffie has become one of my favorite characters with whom to fight.

It is therefore a shame that his combat style is locked in the irmissive campaign. A feature that unlocks it and sound for use in the main game would have been an excellent bonus. However, I am sure to balance who would have been a nightmare for the developers.

As it stands, it’s a big teaser for the character of Yuffie Final Fantasy VII remake the second part. It also helps that as VII remake Before him, Episode intermission is not child’s play. Even in normal difficulty, the game will challenge you, in particular with some of its subsequent meetings. There is a lot of incitement to return to difficult mode and put your skills to the test.

How about a Fort Condor?

Help Episode intermission is an impressive amount of secondary content. The DLC surrounds several activities in its two episodes to take care of you, with a new interpretation of the Whack-A-Box mini-game to add a Ramu VR mission. (Tip: certainly take Ramuh when you can in the first chapter. You will need all the help you can get for chapter two.)

THE main Side-Gig, by far, is the new mini-game of Fort Condor. In the original Ffvii,, Fort Condor was an optional location that you visited during your trips. There, you were responsible for defending the fort of Shinra, in the form of an RTS style mini-game.

Intermission Carries the spirit of the original mini-game, but considerably changes its “flavor”. In RemakeFort Condor is a board game The inhabitants of Midgar, Wutai, and probably other nations play to pass time. Throughout Chapter one, you can challenge various people around the slums in sector 7 to a friendly game – to the triple triad or to Gwent – while you go up to the competitive scale.

In terms of gameplay, Fort Condor plays essentially as Royal Clash. You build a card game, ranging from infantry to turrets and barracks. You spend ATB Meter (that is to say Elixir) to deploy these cards, in order to destroy up to three enemy towers. The side which first eliminates these laps – or maintains an advance when the timer strikes zero – is linked.

Although it is not as complex as Supercell’s successful mobile game, Fort Condor is surprisingly robust. There are nearly 20 different units and a variety of bridge archetypes that you can build. As with the fight of intermission, it is a shame that Square Enix could not implement something for the reliable, such as online matchmaking. I can only hope that the mini-game is cutting the second part of the RemakeBecause he certainly wins this property.

Failed potential

Although there is a lot of good inside Episode intermissionIt is not a flawless performance.

Despite some solid moments, the plot of the DLC falls flat. The mission of Yuffie and Sonon adds practically nothing to the overall story of FFVII remakeAnd looks more like MacGuffin research than anything else. The story adds a little context to the Midgar treatment of the inhabitants of Wutai, but do not wait for massive revelations.

There are also a few moments that gave me a break. Some, like Yuffie’s unclogged shorts, are direct transport of the original game that I would have liked to have stayed in the past. Others, namely some late interactions between Yuffie and Sonon, felt extremely incompatible with the characters Intermission had taken care to accumulate for several hours.

Given the otherwise excellent package, it is easy to forget these scruples. But if Square Enix decides to invest in future episodic DLC – that I hope they will – in the space they can rely on these faults.

Final reflections

Despite some doubts, Episode intermission Make an exceptional song of DLC. He adds an exciting fight, a new funny character in Sonon, and Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Best mini-game to date. It also includes some bonus scenes that – without giving everything – fans of the base game will want to watch.

At $ 20, Episode intermission It is not the cheapest proposal, but it is certainly valid. If you are lucky to have a PlayStation 5, do a favor and try it. Yuffie fans, delight!

Score: 8.9 / 10
